Abstract Text: Pharmacological zinc oxide (ZnO) is widely used to reduce fecal scours in piglets at levels varying between 2000 and 4000 ppm depending on country, piglet age and veterinary restrictions. One experiment was conducted to evaluate pharmacological ZnO with various doses of phytase (Quantum Blue). This abstract is 1 of 2 and will focus on ZnO levels typically fed in the European market (2500 ppm). Piglets (n=640) were weaned at 18 to 21 d of age and allocated at 10 pigs/pen and 8 pens/treatment. Piglets were fed 1 of 8 diets formulated to be adequate in all nutrients, including calcium and phosphorus (NRC, 2012). The 8 diets and the results are listed in Table 1. ADFI tended (P<0.10) to be lowest in pigs fed 0 ppm Zn, 0 ppm Zn plus 3750 phytase or 1250 ppm Zn compared to pigs fed 2500 ppm Zn and 2500 ppm Zn plus 3750 phytase. ADG was lowest (P<0.001) in pigs fed 0 ppm Zn, 0 ppm Zn plus 3750 phytase, or 1250 ppm Zn compared with pigs fed 2500 ppm Zn or 2500 ppm Zn plus 3750 phytase. However, ADG was comparable between pigs fed 1250 ppm Zn plus 1250, 2500 or 3750 FTU/kg phytase and pigs fed 2500 ppm Zn. Pigs fed 0 ppm Zn had the poorest (P<0.002) FCR compared with pigs fed 1250 ppm Zn plus 2500 or 3750 phytase or pigs fed 2500 ppm Zn with or without phytase. Pigs fed 2500 ppm Zn plus 3750 phytase were more efficient (P<0.002) than pigs fed all other treatments, except pigs fed 1250 ppm Zn plus 3750 phytase. In conclusion, piglets fed 2500 ppm Zn plus 3750 FTU/kg phytase had the best performance. Phytase at 2500 or 3750 FTU/kg improved performance in piglets fed 1250 ppm Zn and this was equivalent to piglets fed 2500 ppm Zn without phytase.
